International Flight Ends in Custody

Jossimar Cabrera, accused of murdering his wife and hiding her body in a remote California forest, turned himself in to authorities in Lima, Peru, earlier this month. The arrest follows a manhunt that began when Sheylla Cabrera, his 33-year-old wife, was reported missing from their Southern California home on August 12. Her body was discovered four days later at the bottom of an embankment in the Angeles National Forest.

Cabrera, who fled the U.S. with their three young sons, had remained out of reach for two weeks. Authorities confirmed he entered Peru shortly after Sheylla was reported missing, sparking international coordination between U.S. and Peruvian officials. Upon surrender, he was taken into custody without incident and is currently awaiting extradition to Los Angeles.

Surveillance Tapes and Legal Fallout

The case took a critical turn after law enforcement obtained surveillance footage from the Cabreras’ apartment complex. The video allegedly shows Jossimar dragging a large, heavy object wrapped in a distinctive material toward his vehicle. Investigators later confirmed that the body of Sheylla Cabrera had been wrapped in matching fabric when discovered in the forest.

Authorities acted swiftly to recover the couple’s three children from Peru, returning them safely to Los Angeles. They are now in the custody of Sheylla’s family. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has filed a formal murder charge against Jossimar Cabrera, including allegations that he used a knife as a deadly weapon during the crime. If convicted, he faces 26 years to life in prison.

Extradition and Cause of Death Pending

The extradition process is expected to take several months. In the interim, Cabrera will remain held by Peruvian authorities under bilateral cooperation terms. Legal experts note that while extradition between the two countries is routine, it can be delayed by procedural and diplomatic steps.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office has not yet released an official cause of death for Sheylla Cabrera. Results from the autopsy are expected to provide further clarity on the nature of the crime and whether additional charges may follow. Investigators continue to piece together the timeline and motive behind what has become an internationally monitored case.
