Moving from the Kremlin straight to Ukraine’s capital in a single weekend shows President Trump’s team is treating this as urgent, hands-on work, not a slow diplomatic dance.

A White House official confirmed the trip was part of a broader push for trilateral talks meant to end Russia’s war on Ukraine. Zelensky greeted Witkoff and Kushner at St. Sophia Cathedral, close to where a Russian drone had struck Ukraine’s security service headquarters just two days earlier. That location was no accident. It put the cost of this war on full display for two of President Trump’s closest negotiators.

Zelensky Signals Ukraine Wants A Deal

Before the meeting, Zelensky said Ukraine was ready to negotiate to speed up “the end of the war”. That statement matters. It shows Kyiv is not stalling. Just weeks earlier, Zelensky told reporters he’d held a “detailed and constructive” call with Witkoff and Kushner and that both sides were locking in dates for this very trip. Ukraine’s government has said, in plain terms, that it wants this process to move forward now.

This visit is not the first contact between these envoys and Kyiv. Zelensky has held multiple calls with Witkoff and Kushner through 2026, at times calling them “positive” and “long and substantive”. In August, Zelensky said Ukraine had already handed U.S. negotiators formal proposals for ending the war with Moscow. The Kyiv trip builds on months of groundwork, not a cold start.

A Push For Three-Way Talks Follows A History Of Stalled Deals

The goal now is getting the United States, Ukraine, and Russia to the same table at the same time, something that hasn’t happened yet in this round of diplomacy. Since December 2025, when Witkoff and Kushner first sat with Putin for over four hours in the Kremlin, talks have moved in a shuttle pattern, one side at a time. That approach has produced statements of progress before, including from Geneva talks in February, where Washington reported “meaningful progress” even as Zelensky said he was dissatisfied with the outcome.

Conservatives who want peace through strength should welcome President Trump’s team doing the hard, unglamorous work of shuttle diplomacy instead of writing blank checks for endless war. Talks in Florida in March produced a new prisoner exchange and a second day of direct sessions, proof this process can deliver real results for real people, not just press releases. That’s the kind of tangible outcome America’s allies deserve to see more of.

None of this guarantees a final deal. Peace talks in this war have stalled before, and past ceasefire efforts between Ukraine and Russia have collapsed under the weight of broken promises. But President Trump’s envoys going straight from Moscow to Kyiv in one weekend, backed by a Ukrainian leader publicly ready to negotiate, marks real movement after years of a grinding, deadly stalemate that previous administrations failed to end.
