The California Senate debate between Steve Garvey and Adam Schiff should have been about California policy, but the Democrats and the media are still so obsessed with Trump that a large section of the debate focused on the Trump IMPEACHMENT trials.
Wasn’t that, like, 10 scandals ago?

A debate between California Senate candidates Adam Schiff and Steve Garvey on Tuesday quickly turned into a fiery exchange over former President Donald Trump, as Schiff’s role in the 2020 impeachment trial and January 6 hearings took center stage. The clash highlighted the stark differences between the candidates, with Schiff defending his actions and Garvey accusing the longtime congressman of being overly obsessed with Trump at the expense of California’s needs.

Schiff, the lead impeachment manager during Trump’s trial, didn’t hold back when asked about his support for Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee for president, stating that Trump had been a “disastrous president” and a threat to democracy. “Americans want someone who is good, decent, and ethical,” Schiff said, emphasizing the clear choice for him was Kamala Harris.
Garvey, a former MLB star running as a Republican, attempted to distance himself from Trump, but still voiced support for the former president, claiming he voted for him three times. He criticized Schiff’s fixation on Trump, suggesting it detracted from addressing key issues for Californians. “I can’t imagine how you get up every morning with one mission: going after Donald Trump,” Garvey remarked, accusing Schiff of being a proxy for his party’s leadership.
Schiff, in turn, took Garvey to task for his continued support of Trump despite the January 6 attack on the Capitol. “The fact that you still support the guy who incited that violent attack tells me you’d never take your oath of office as seriously as I do,” Schiff shot back.
Garvey countered, claiming that Schiff’s focus on Trump signals a disconnect with working Californians, before adding a jab about Schiff’s censure by the House and removal from the House Intelligence Committee, moves orchestrated by Republicans.
While the debate covered topics like immigration, border security, and the economy, the exchange over Trump dominated headlines. With Schiff holding a strong lead in the polls and dominating fundraising, Garvey has struggled to gain ground in the deep-blue state.
The race, however, is part of a broader national battle as Republicans aim to flip the U.S. Senate in 2024, making the stakes higher than ever for both candidates.
