Newlywed Couple Killed After Semitruck Overturns on I-70

It seems as though traffic collisions are more common than ever, with news coming out every week about families, couples, and lone drivers being injured or killed in crashes caused by reckless drivers. And it’s happened again in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, where a newlywed couple was tragically killed in a major crash on Interstate 70.

Juliana Rodriguez-Plata and Ruben Rodriguez, who had just gotten married, were traveling on the highway with their one-year-old son and Juliana’s parents when a semi-truck rolled over. Huge pipes fell off the back of the truck, rolling across the highway and smashing into their vehicle.

According to police reports, at least seven vehicles in total were involved in the crash.

The family’s one-year-old son survived the crash and had only just celebrated his birthday on the Sunday before the crash. The couple married on the following Monday.

Speaking to local media, Carlos Plata, the father of the bride, described the horrific moment that he saw the pipes flying toward the car.

“I just closed my eyes and no reaction,” he said, describing how he felt the impact from the pipes and then “woke up out of nowhere.” After coming around, Plata said that he saw the baby crying and everyone else around him “unconscious, not waking up.”

For any readers who feel moved to help the family pay for the funeral costs, a GoFundMe was created by Plata, which you can find here.

We are reaching out for support to help these families during this incredibly difficult time. Funds will be used to cover funeral costs, support for little Daniel, and any additional expenses that may arise. Your generosity will provide much-needed relief and help ensure that these families can begin to heal and find solace,” the campaign explains.
