Daily Show host Jon Stewart responded to Joe Biden’s decision not to run for the Oval Office again by posting a single word to Twitter: Legend. Stewart has expressed his doubts about Biden’s cognitive health but made similar remarks about Donald Trump. “Biden’s lost a step, but Trump regularly says things at rallies that would warrant a wellness check,” he tweeted in February. In a separate post, he said American spirits were “crushed” by the lack of an inspirational candidate on either side of the political aisle, and while he did not directly call on President Biden to stand down, he said that in November, Americans will be asked to choose between a “megalomaniac and a suffocating gerontocracy.”
In June, Stewart made clear he is no fan of Donald Trump and celebrated his conviction in a New York court on falsifying documents charges. He particularly lashed out at conservative media coverage, which claimed that Trump had fallen victim to a political witch-hunt backed by the Biden administration. Mr. Stewart turned the tables on Republicans and said it was they who weaponized the system but accused Democrats of doing so to cover up their own misdeeds.
Nevertheless, the popular host also criticized Democrats, saying their “glee” at the verdict was an attempt to “exploit the moment politically without giving the impression that this was the plan all along.”
When Donald Trump narrowly avoided assassination at a Pennsylvania rally, Stewart declared that America had “dodged a catastrophe.” The shooting caused him to reflect on the political reality in the United States and the deep divisions that exist in American society. The host confessed that his first reaction was to “find out who did it.” He added that many others likely did the same and hoped that the culprit was “not on their team.”
Most Americans, including prominent media figures such as Jon Stewart, considered Joe Biden’s performance in the first (and so far only) Presidential debate as a disaster. He described later “excuses” from the Democrats as “bulls**t.”
He was not alone.
Celebrities and lawmakers reacted with mixed views after the Atlanta event, with some expressing sympathy for President Biden. Roseanne Barr, for instance, who is a staunch Trump supporter, said she felt “sad” watching the President. “I take no happiness in this debate. Biden is clearly not here,” she said.
Even Hollywood icon Bette Midler, a long-time Democrat, declared, “Trump is clearly the better choice.” She somberly followed up that comment, saying, “Let’s take this moment to pray for our country.” The actress and singer concluded her remarks by saying that Trump had lied throughout.
Meanwhile, Jon Stewart joked, “Both of these men should be using performance-enhancing drugs.”
Some celebrities, however, raised their spirits as soon as Kamala Harris became the obvious Democrat to replace Joe Biden at the top of the party’s ticket. Stars who have backed the Vice President include George Clooney, Barbra Streisand, Mark Hamill, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
