Iconic Award-Winning Comic Bob Newhart Passes Away at 94

Bob Newhart, a famous actor and comedian, died in Los Angeles at the age of 94.

“The Bob Newhart Show” and “Newhart,” his two iconic television series, were top-rated in the 1970s and 1980s. In addition to his guest appearances on “The Big Bang Theory,” Newhart played Papa Elf in the 2003 holiday hit “Elf,” and he most recently appeared in three episodes of “Young Sheldon.”

Before he found fame in acting, Newhart performed stand-up comedy. He became famous for his unique stammering and deadpan delivery, which made him a comedy star. He shared a “shtick” with comedian Shelley Berman, where they would have phone conversations, with the viewer only hearing one side of the conversation.

Comedian Ellen Degeneres would later “lift” this comedic device and pay homage while introducing it to a new generation.

Newhart’s list of achievements includes a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and three Grammys.

In 2013, for his role as Arthur Jeffries/Professor Proton on “The Big Bang Theory,” Newhart was nominated for an Emmy. For three episodes of Young Sheldon, the spin-off series, he played the same character.

From 1963 until her death in April 2023, at the age of 82, Newhart was married to Ginnie Quinn. His children are Robert, Timothy, Jennifer, and Courtney; he also leaves behind ten grandkids.

A comedy album by Bob Newhart, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart and number one on the Billboard charts in 1960. He was named Best New Artist and Album of the Year at the Grammys.

In addition to hosting Saturday Night Live twice (1980 and 1995), Newhart, a good friend to Johnny Carson, would guest host his show 87 times.

But, famously, Newhart’s best friend was Don Rickles, who passed away in 2017; Rickles was 90.
