Husband Refuses to Hand Late Wife’s Clothes Over to Sister

The latest family drama to be strewn over social media has pitted a grieving widow against his own sister.

Reddit is notorious (and somewhat popular) for being a space for people to ask questions to gauge a wider public response and opinion on a given situation or topic. Its “Am I the a**hole” or “AITA” page attracts a notable amount of attention for its high drama content.

Recently, a man took to the page to ask if he was overreacting to a situation with his sister, whom he described as “a selfish cow” that was disliked by him and his late wife. The post quickly gathered more than 22,000 reactions and 1,400 comments.

The user first explained the situation he is in, which is that he is in the midst of grieving the loss of his wife, who died of ovarian cancer two years after being diagnosed. He noted that the last six months of her life “were hell.” Prior to her death, the woman was a mediator and corporate lawyer who “had some very nice work clothes.”

Despite having not done much for “any of us during that time,” the man said that his sister began “asking about my wife’s clothes.” But not just on a random afternoon—the sister reportedly brought it up at her late sister-in-law’s wake. The man said that he “brushed her off” and “ignored her” even when she claimed she wanted to “pick out a few pieces” that would serve as a reminder of the deceased family member.

Later, the man explained, he went to his mother’s birthday party, which fell six months after his wife’s death. He described himself as “not in the mood to deal with people.” Unfortunately, the grieving man was forced to do just that. His sister also made an appearance and once again brought up his wife’s wardrobe.

He explained to his sister that his wife had wanted him to give her clothes to a local women’s shelter where she had volunteered. The late lawyer intended on helping other women to succeed in court cases, appointments, and job interviews by providing them with professional attire they may not be able to afford themselves.

His sister then described his wife as being “selfish in death,” which triggered an outburst from him and led him to say that he would opt for the clothes to be “lit on fire” rather than be worn by his sister.

The man received a plethora of condolences and affirmation for his actions from Reddit readers and users who decried the behavior of his sister.
