Multiple myeloma is a highly uncommon kind of blood cancer, and veteran California politician and congressman John Garamendi announced his diagnosis on Monday.
Garamendi (D-Walnut Grove), 79, announced the early detection of cancer in a message and video shared on Monday afternoon on the social networking site X.
Due to multiple myeloma, the immune system is compromised, and certain vaccinations lose some of their effectiveness. When cancer strikes plasma cells, they can no longer make enough antibodies to protect the body from harmful pathogens.
According to a statement from his office, while undergoing outpatient therapy at Kaiser Permanente Sacramento, Garamendi intends to keep working. He mentioned that he is undergoing chemoimmunotherapy, a therapeutic approach that enhances the immune system by combining chemotherapy with immunotherapy.
Garamendi noted that his doctor advised him to limit his contact with viruses, such as COVID-19 and the flu because his immune system is compromised. According to his office, he intends to cut down on trips to Washington and other public appearances.
The congressman expressed his love and solidarity with all of the other families dealing with cancer and other health conditions. He also expressed his best wishes to nurses, doctors, and medical personnel who provide comfort and hope.
Between 2007 and 2009, Garamendi served as California’s lieutenant governor in the Schwarzenegger administration. Throughout his tenure in the state legislature (1974–1990), he was an outspoken supporter of healthcare for all. He then became the first elected insurance commissioner in the 1990s.
In light of the recent frenzy surrounding Joe Biden’s bid for president, California Democrat John Garamendi has a message for his party’s base: calm down.
As the debate’s aftermath rages on, Garamendi appeared on Fox News Saturday to weigh in on the question of whether Biden can successfully face off against Trump and spend another four years in office. He thinks he can.
Garamendi’s remarks follow an increasing chorus of House Democrats who have demanded that Biden retire so that another candidate may be considered.
